Joanne Peter is an experienced fibre artist, hand weaver and textile professional working from her home studio in Nelson, New Zealand. Each garment produced is authentic, hand woven and lovingly made by Joanne using New Zealand fibres. Alpaca yarn (actually fleece but often called wool) is a fine strong fibre as soft as cashmere and lighter then sheep's wool. The fibre consists of outer scales lying against a hollow center. Microscopic air pockets contained in the fibre create the outstanding insulation and unique thermal properties and are the reason for the light weight of garments made of Alpaca. The natural wave in Alpaca fibre creates a yarn that returns its shape in time. Possum wool is the only new natural fibre to be produced in the last 150 years. The New Zealand Brush Tail Possum is the size of a large cat and has thick luxurious fur. It has no natural enemies in New Zealand and has multiplied to alarming numbers. Possum fur has a hollow core. The only other creature with similar fur is the Polar Bear. This unique property makes the fur extremely warm while also making it very light and fluffy. Merino wool has been chosen as a carrier yarn because it is considered the best natural fibre to complement the characteristics of the fur. In addition 10% silk is added into the mix to provide a silky smooth finish to the shawls and scarves woven from this material. Wool-Mohair is an all season fashion fibre combination, wonderfully warm but woven in an airy, lightweight structure that breathes with the body on warm days. Fine Romney wool has been chosen for the fibre's luster and well defined crimp. This combines perfectly with the 20 % bouclé Mohair blended with the wool by way of intermixing threads. Mohair is a silk like fabric made from the hair of Angora goats. It is durable, resilient, light and warm. It has a high affinity for dyes and wonderful colour combinations can be achieved.
